Governments around the world are desperately trying to encourage the use of more energy efficient appliances and one way of doing this has been to offer government rebates for people buying new and efficient appliances. Recently, the UK government offered money for those getting rid of old cars for new ones and found it was successful – because of this they then applied it to boilers in a big to increase efficiency in the household. This offer has now ended in the UK but it was very popular with many people having new, more energy efficient boilers in their homes.
The US government offers a very wide range of rebates for those wanting to buy new, energy efficient appliances. Around $300 million is ear-marked for spending across the states to help people upgrade on new appliances. The tax credits are generally around 30% of the overall cost of the appliance. There are a few short, simple rules – firstly, you are entitled to 30% off the appliance up to $1,500 and only if you live in the house currently and it is your primary residence, therefore new buildings and second homes do not get this rebate. This rebate will last until 2010. Confusingly however, there is another rebate that expires in 2016 that allows pretty much any house, new or old, primary or secondary (excluding rentals) that can have the 30% rebate, and up to any price limit, not just the $1,500 limit as described previously. These rebates generally only apply to appliances carrying the Energy Star logo.

Would you like to learn how to become eligible to obtain rebates for energy efficient appliances? The main thing to understand is that these rebates will vary from state to state when you purchase your brand new, qualified, ENERGY STAR appliance. Because of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, these helpful rebates are being funded to the tune of a whopping $300 million. When you participate in this special program, the rebates act as an incentive to encourage you to either replace used appliance with new energy-efficient ones or purchase new ENERGY STAR appliances altogether.
The United States Department of Energy or DOE has approved 56 plans for every United States territory and every U.S. state to put into practice their own rebate program. You can learn about specific requirements and eligibility criteria for your state by visiting the official website of the DOE. When you visit your state’s appliance rebate website you’ll find instructions and necessary forms to fill out to start the ball rolling and help you receive your rebates for energy efficient appliances. Every territory and US state has chosen specific ENERGY STAR qualified appliances that are eligible for a rebate.
As you probably already know, most of the energy generated in your home is to power up appliances as well as in cooling and heating water and space. Because you are choosing to replace those old appliances and equipment with ones that meet industry requirements for energy efficiency, you’ll watch in amazement as your utility bills begin to come down. Here’s a short list of the DOE’s recommendation on rebates for energy efficient appliances: Water heaters, heat pumps, refrigerators, washer and dryers, central air conditioners, oil and gas furnaces, freezers, dishwashers and room air conditioners.

When it comes to going green many people don’t have the drive to do what it takes to help the environment. This lack of interest and or perseverance can be caused by working too many hours to really want to do something, pushing too hard in other aspects of your life or even just the fact that it will tie up a sizable amount of your capital for a reasonable amount of time. However, for the people that subscribe to the last reason, there is no excuse any longer.
In many cases, energy efficient appliances not only help reduce your monthly outflow of money, which will thereby pay for the appliance itself in a reasonable amount of time, but they can also be bought at a discount in many cases. When these items are bought using a sale or other discount they will often times cost the consumer 20-25% less on average. To top off all the savings that the appliances themselves can help with, the government has also listed a tax credit for people who want to make the switch.
This tax credit, while not valid on all energy efficient appliances, is valid for most new appliances and will cover up to 30% of the total costs of the purchase up to $1,500. This is a limited credit for your primary residence and will only be valid for the rest of 2010 on most things to help you go green. Other credits, for less common items that aren’t necessary to the functioning of a normal household will also be available to consumers through the end of 2016. To be sure that your purchases qualify for this incentive it is important to check the IRS website before you commit to anything that may not be on the list of items.

In a day and age when everyone is worried about being kinder towards the environment and “going green”, there’s no better way to perform all the daily tasks in your house than using energy efficient appliances. Not only do these appliances use far less energy than their older, energy-sucking counterparts, but they can also put money back in your pocket!
Energy efficient appliances are available in just about any appliance you need. From washing machines, to dishwashers, to refrigerators, and toasters, any appliance you need to buy most likely has an energy efficient model available. Sometimes, because these products are just starting to become so popular, they might cost a bit more than other appliances. But consider that in the long run, your appliance will cost you more on your regular energy bill and you’ll see that the investment is definitely worth it.
Another way that energy efficient appliances can save you money is because in many places, the government will actually give you a rebate for buying an appliance that comes with an energy-efficient seal of approval. These rebates are usually given on larger energy efficient appliances, such as furnaces and air conditioners. But however you’re saving on your energy efficient appliance, you’ll be glad that you not only have more money in your pocket, but that is helping the environment too!
